ECE 22.06 or SNELL rated - no exceptions
With armour at shoulders, elbows, and back protector pocket
With knee and hip armour - no denim
CE Level 2 - summer and waterproof pair recommended
Ankle protection, oil-resistant sole, ideally waterproof
Mandatory in some European countries (France, Spain, Italy)
Reduce fatigue on long motorway stretches
Compact moto-specific kit with tourniquet and wound dressings
Laminated, kept on person - not just in the bike
Legally required in many EU countries
Pro Tips
Pre-Tour Bike Check
- →Service your bike no more than 500 miles before departure
- →Check tyre tread depth - minimum 2mm, ideally 3mm+ for Alpine roads
- →Verify brake pad thickness front and rear
- →Test all lights including indicators and brake light
- →Check chain tension and sprocket wear
- →Ensure coolant, brake fluid and oil levels are topped up
International Documents
- →Valid passport (not expiring within 6 months of return)
- →Driving licence + International Driving Permit if required
- →Vehicle registration document (V5C for UK riders)
- →Motor insurance certificate - confirm EU coverage with your insurer
- →European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or travel health insurance
- →Green Card (international motor insurance certificate)
- →Emergency contact details and travel insurance policy number
Packing Strategy
- →Weight distribution: heaviest items low and central in panniers
- →Pack what you need daily in the top box - avoid digging into panniers
- →Use dry bags inside luggage - even 'waterproof' cases leak
- →Soft luggage conforms better to your bike than hard cases in tight spots
- →Aim for under 15kg total luggage weight for comfortable handling
- →Roll clothes instead of folding - saves space and reduces creasing
